What Happened Today? It was Sunday, under the sign of Taurus. The US president was Harry S. Truman (Democratic). State of the Union, directed by Frank Capra, was one of the most viewed movies released in 1948 .
The Story Of The Earth:
6. More than two centuries before the birth of Christ, the polymath Greek philosopher Eratosthenes of Cyrene conducted the earliest documented experiment on Earth.
7. He based his ingenious measurement of Earth’s circumference on the simple observation of shadows.
8. In the town of Syene, Egypt, at noon on the summer solstice, he observed the Sun directly overhead.
9. A vertical post cast no shadow.
10. By contrast, on the same day at the same times in the coastal city of Alexandria, some 490 miles to the north, a similar vertical post cast a slight shadow, this revealing that the Sun was not quite directly overhead in that location.
Microbiology:
6. Microbiology For Dummies is an overview of the material covered in a typical first-year microbiology course.
7. Some courses cover more medical, molecular, or environmental microbiology than others, so we’ve included them all here.
8. In this book, you will find clear explanations of the characteristics that microorganisms share, the things that make microbes different from one another and the rest of life on earth, the processes important to microbial life, the diversity of microbial life and how microbes affect us.
9. If you’re a visual learner, you’ll appreciate the many illustrations.
10. And if you like to organize material into categories, you’ll find the lists and tables useful.
Psychology:
6. Everybody is interested in psychology.
7. People are fascinating, and that includes you!
8. We often defy explanation and evade predication.
9. Figuring people out can be pretty hard.
10. Just when you think that you’ve figured someone out, bang, he surprises you.
Molecular & Cell Biology:
6. Genetic diseases are a dramatic example of how important one cell type, one protein, and one gene can be to an organism.
7. Exploring this connection between genes, proteins, and cellular function is at the heart of molecular and cellular biology.
8. Molecular and cellular biology is about studying cell structure and function down to the level of the individual molecules that make up the cell.
9. The most famous molecule in cells is DNA, and much of molecular biology focuses on this molecule– reading DNA, working with DNA, and other understanding how cells use DNA.
10. Cells and Viruses: Discovering the Inhabitants of the Microscopic World- If you were alive just 400 years ago, you would’ve had no idea that germs can spread diseases, that your blood contains cells that carry oxygen around your body, or that new people are made when sperm cells join with egg cells.
